William Hurt - DAVE PURCELL
William Hurt trained at the Tufts University and New York's Julliard School of Music and Drama. He spent the early years of his career on the stage and between schooling, summer stock, regional repertory and Off Broadway, appearing in more than 50 productions, including Hurlyburly (for which he was nominated for a Tony Award), and My Life (Obie Award for Best Actor).
In 1980, Hurt appeared in his first film, Altered States. He was nominated by the American Academy for Best Actor for Broadcast News and Children of a Lesser God. He won the Best Actor Oscar, and Best Actor Awards from the British Academy and the Cannes Film Festival for his performance in Kiss of the Spider Woman.
Among his other films are Body Heat, The Big Chill, Eyewitness, Gorky Park, Alice, I Love You To Death, The Accidental Tourist, The Doctor, The Plague, Trial By Jury, Second Best, Smoke, Confidences a un Inconnu, Jane Eyre, Dark City, The Proposition, and The Big Brass Ring. In 1988, Hurt was awarded the first Spencer Tracy Award from UCLA.
Last year, Hurt delivered a memorable performance in Sunshine, opposite Ralph Fiennes. Directed by Istvan Szabo, Sunshine received three Genie Awards, including one for Best Motion Picture. He also appeared in The Simian Line with Lynn Redgrave. His most recent roles include Michael with John Travolta, One True Thing with Meryl Streep and the TV remake of Dune for the Sci-Fi Channel. Hurt also starred in Steven Spielberg's A.I. released earlier this summer.
Molly Parker - ALICE
Vancouver native Molly Parker won the 1998 Best Actress Genie Award and international recognition for her role in Lynne Stopkewich's first film Kissed, which received critical acclaim at the Toronto and Cannes International Film Festivals. Molly also starred in Suspicious River, also directed by Stopkewich, which premiered at the 2000 Toronto Film Festival.
Other feature films include Sunshine with Ralph Fiennes, Center of the World , Wonderland, Waking the Dead which premiered at the 2000 Sundance Film Festival, Under Heaven, The Intruder, and the IMAX production Wings of Courage. The War Bride, directed by Lyndon Chubbock, will be in theatres this fall.
On television Molly starred opposite Don McKellar and Daniel McIvor in the CBC TV comedy series Twitch City, and earned a Gemini nomination for her starring role in Paris or Somewhere. Among her other credits are the lead in the Fox Mini series Intensity, and movies of the week Serving in Silence and The Ranger, the Cook and the Hole in the Sky.
Recently, Molly wrapped filming on the feature comedy Men with Brooms, directed by Paul Gross. Molly has two films premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival. In addition to Rare Birds, the comedy Last Wedding directed by Bruce Sweeney, opens the festival.
Andy Jones - PHONSE MURPHY
A native of Newfoundland, Andy Jones has been writing and acting in theatre for over 25 years. In television he has co-written and performed in the series Codco, Dooley Gardens, and The Cathy Jones Special.
He has written for television's Kids in the Hall (where he was part of the team nominated for an Emmy Award) and the upcoming Nasty Habits. The winner of numerous awards including a Gemini in 1992 and Atlantic Film Festival Moonsnail in 1989 and again in 1995, Andy was inducted into the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council Hall of Honour in 1993.
His film acting credits include The Adventure of Faustus Bidgood (which he co-wrote and co-directed), Life With Billy, A Secret Nation, Paint Cans, Coleslaw Warehouse, Extraordinary Visitor and Brain Candy.
